From Survival to Freedom: Kelly's Journey in Recovery

by Kelly

Sep 4, 2025

Growing up as the middle child of five, I often felt out of place long before I ever touched a drink or a drug. At 13, I discovered alcohol, and for the first time, I felt comfortable in my own skin. What started as a way to quiet my inner discomfort quickly became the most important thing in my life, leading to failing grades, walking away from sports, and a cycle of blackouts. By high school, I became a young mother and traded alcohol for pain medication. At 18, I entered my first treatment center, beginning years of cycling through programs, short periods of abstinence, and devastating relapses. Addiction became a daily struggle—just surviving each day felt impossible. I found myself in and out of jails, hospitals, and treatment centers and ultimately lost custody of my daughter.

Recovery has given me more than freedom from substances—it has given me life. Where I once lived only to survive, today I thrive. Through recovery, I have rebuilt broken relationships, regained custody and trust, and learned how to show up fully as a mother, daughter, and friend. It has opened doors to a career I am passionate about, allowing me to support others on their own journey and advocate for reducing stigma around addiction. Recovery has also given me the tools to face challenges with resilience, the ability to experience joy in the little things, and the courage to dream bigger than I ever thought possible.

Today, I live with gratitude, peace, and purpose. Recovery has transformed not just who I am, but how I live—reminding me daily that freedom, connection, and growth are possible for anyone who chooses this path.
