The hardest part of loving someone in recovery.

You lie awake wondering if they're okay. You check your phone hoping for a text—and dreading a call. You want to help but you're afraid of pushing too hard. You've been told to "let go" but every instinct tells you to hold on.

You're not overreacting. You're not controlling. You're a parent, a partner, a sibling, a friend who loves someone through the hardest thing they've ever faced.

Accountable exists because our founder's girlfriend broke into his email to find him during an overdose—and saved his life. We understand that families don't need to step back. They need better tools to stay connected.

We help individuals build lasting recovery—while rebuilding trust.

"I would be dead if she had waited 15 minutes."

Empowering recovery through accountability.

Accountable was founded by Matthew Serel, an experienced tech entrepreneur, and AJ Diaz, a Licensed Social Worker, based on their own recovery experiences.

In 2013, Matt Serel—Accountable's CEO—overdosed alone during a work trip. His girlfriend, now his wife, broke into his email to find his hotel location and called 911.

After treatment, Matt faced something no one prepared him for: rebuilding a relationship shattered by addiction. He spent his first year of recovery isolated and frightened, struggling to find affordable support while the person who loved him most had no way to know if he was okay.

That experience became Accountable. Matt and co-founder AJ Diaz—who met in group therapy—built the platform they wished had existed. Not surveillance. Not punishment. A bridge between fear and peace of mind.

Every feature on this platform exists because a family needed it.

Our mission is to help others build a sustainable, fulfilling life in recovery—just as we have.

"You Are Accountable has been very helpful in my recovery. At first I was skeptical but once I fully participated and committed Accountable to my recovery what a tremendous experience and help it has been for my addition. Jesse Williams my coach would highly recommend for anyone struggling and or in need of help with there addiction. Thank you Jesse appreciate you you."

"You Are Accountable’s Breathalyzer is a GREAT tool to reduce stress and anxiety of family members and all other “team members” signed up to receive messages and confirmations.

I can’t say enough about it. Even the patient loves it because it allows them to confirm to those they love that they are in fact still sober. Thanks, from our whole family!!!”

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if my loved one isn't ready?

That's one of the most common situations we hear. You don't need to wait until they say yes. Call us at (646) 450-7641 and we'll talk through your options. Some families gift Accountable to their loved one. Others have a conversation with our team first and then introduce the idea together. We'll help you find the right approach—without pressure or ultimatums.

2. Is this surveillance?

No. Accountable is support with transparency—not surveillance. Your loved one chooses to enroll. They choose their plan. They consent to sharing results with you. The monitoring exists to build trust, not to catch someone. As our founder says: "We're not here to catch you—we're here to catch you when you fall."

3. What happens if they have a slip?"

Slips can be part of recovery—they don't mean failure. If a test comes back positive:

  1. Their coach reaches out immediately—not to judge, but to support

  2. Together, they identify what happened and adjust the plan

  3. You're notified based on your preferences

  4. Touchpoints increase temporarily to help stabilize

A slip with Accountable is caught early and addressed with care. Without Accountable, a slip can become a spiral that no one sees coming.

4. What if my loved one already has a therapist or is in treatment?

Accountable works alongside clinical care, not in place of it. We partner with treatment centers like Charlie Health and All Points North to provide support between sessions. Your loved one's coach can coordinate with their clinical team to reinforce the same goals. Think of us as the bridge between appointments.
