Melissa's Story: Finding the Silver Lining

Melissa McGill

My path into the recovery field began during one of the most difficult periods of my life. While struggling with addiction, the involvement of Child Protective Services and the end of a ten-year marriage shaped by domestic violence ultimately brought me into treatment at a time when much of what I knew—my family structure, my sense of security, and even my sense of myself—was falling apart.

Treatment became more than a place for me to get sober. It was where I began to find my voice, understand my own story, and recognize that recovery could mean much more than simply leaving addiction behind. In time, I came to see the upheaval I had once viewed only as a tragedy differently. The end of my marriage and everything that followed became, in many ways, “the bad thing that had to happen” for me to finally grow into myself. What initially felt like the destruction of my life eventually created the space for me to build one of my own.

Recovery allowed me to find my footing professionally, develop true independence, and discover a career that feels deeply connected to my own experience. Today, I have the privilege of doing work I genuinely love: helping others navigate their own recovery and begin to imagine what life can look like beyond addiction.

I am especially passionate about helping people find their own “silver lining”—the insight, strength, connection, or sense of purpose that can begin to light the way forward when addiction has made it difficult to see one. For me, recovery has never been simply about getting back what was lost. It has been about discovering who I was capable of becoming, and helping others recognize that possibility within themselves, too.
